Announcement: Christmas Eve Candlelighting Service will be VIRTUAL only

Beloved,

I have been thinking and praying about this for several days. As the Omicron variant spreads rapidly through our city, we are all wondering how to respond. Yesterday, President Biden reminded us that this is not March 2020. We are more prepared and ready, thanks to the vaccine. However, it is still our responsibility to act with love and care. This week, Grand Park cancelled the live portion of their New Year’s Eve gathering, The Music Center cancelled the in-person portions of their celebration, and the NHL is pausing their season for a week.

While our church is much smaller than these gatherings, the weather provides an even greater concern. Beginning tomorrow, Los Angeles will be experiencing rainfall for the next several days. We cannot use the indoor/protective resources typically available to us, due to COVID. Without some kind of covering, the band members, congregants, and electrical equipment would be exposed to the rain.

My heart is heavy, but I am deeply concerned for person and property, given the concerns about COVID and the rainstorm. Gathering in person was our hope and intent, but it feels like we would be risking health, safety, and comfort to do so. I believe that the risks of meeting in person outweigh the rewards.

We are planning to produce a virtual service that will be a beautiful celebration of the birth of Jesus. Debbie and Oscar are distributing the Blessing Bags and refreshments today, so that people will still be able to receive these gifts. Stephen, Kobi, Diego, and Salvador are working to transition all of our content into video, so that we will still be able to sing together with El Dorado.

A dear colleague in New York City shared that their Christmas Eve service would be virtual this year because “this is what love looks like.” I pray for your health, safety, and grace as we navigate these challenging times. I am grateful that we are all here to discuss these matters, as your life is precious and valuable.

I look forward to sharing Christmas Eve with you, virtually, at 5:30 pm PST. We will be streaming on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

God’s promise to us remains. God is with us, now and always.

Blessings to each of you,
Rev. Mandy

Announcements:

Stewardship Campaign: Our goal is to raise $20,000/month for payroll, so that we can continue to employ all the people who are working tirelessly to bring the Good News to all who need to hear it. My prayer is that we can raise enough money to cover our church’s payroll over the next three months. This allows the congregation to use any money we have on hand to directly support our ministries.

We have converted our parsonage into a co-housing community, which now has 6 residents living safely and affordably together. We have been able to support people who might not have been able to find sustainable housing in the current market, and we can ensure that they will stay housed during the pandemic. It would be an additional hope to raise $3,000/month to support the utilities and expenses of the co-housing community.

Jubilee Fund: This fund is designated to helping reduce the burden of debt in our community. As we make our way through the pandemic, the economic pressures are going to be challenging. If you feel led, you can now donate through Venmo!

Scripture: Matthew 2:1-12, NRSV

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’ When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:
“And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who is to shepherd my people Israel.” ’

Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.’ When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

One: This is the Word of God for us, the people of God.
All: Thanks be to God!

     One: We who have walked in darkness have seen a great light;

ALL: We, who lived in darkness, on us a light has shined!

One: For a child has been born for us, a Son given to us,

ALL: He shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace! He will rule with justice and righteousness from this time onward and forevermore!

*HYMN                                  “O Come, All Ye Faithful”      v. 1-3, 6

LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE                                        Stephen & Mia Folds

Voice One: We relight four candles representing the four weeks of Advent as we awaited the blessed hope of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

ALL: O come, O come, Emmanuel. Let us rejoice! God is with us!

*HYMN                              “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” v.5

SECOND LESSON: Isaiah 11:1-4     Andrew Janey

The Peaceful Kingdom

A shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.

2 The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding,

the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

3 His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear;

4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;

he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,

and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

*CAROL                            “Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming”

THIRD LESSON: Luke 1:26-33, 38              Debbie Bowlus

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.’29 But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.’ 38 Then Mary said, ‘Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.’ Then the angel departed from her.

CAROL       In the Bleak Midwinter”   Laurie Ray & Mandy McDow, vocals & guitar; Wes Goldsberry, violin

PRAYER OF CONFESSION                             Tom Grode

God of Glory, we celebrate the birth of the Christ as a child on this night. This is how you came to redeem us, not as a king in splendor, but as an infant in swaddling cloths. Just as you have changed the world, change us, that we might see your might clothed in humility. Help us to praise you, to honor Jesus with gifts of mercy. Help us to welcome your perfect love with our love for one another. Help us to hear the call of the needy and the cry of the world for peace. Forgive us. Heal us. Redeem us. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON        “O Little Town of Bethlehem”

*PASSING OF THE PEACE - Through the act of passing the peace of Christ, we offer our sincere desire to love our neighbor.

FOURTH LESSON: Luke 2: 1-7                Savannah Southern-Smith

The Birth of Jesus

2In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3All went to their own towns to be registered. 4 Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. 5He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child.6 While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

CAROL                            “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear”

FIFTH LESSON: Luke 2:8-20                Mark Schiff

The Shepherds and the Angels

8 In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.10 But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,

14 ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven,

and on earth peace among those whom he favors!’

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’ 16So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger.17 When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

CAROL                                  “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                                            John 1:1-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

Passing of the Peace: Through the act of passing the peace of Christ, we offer our sincere desire to love our neighbor.

You are invited to greet one another in the live stream chat on Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook.

Justice for Dr. Aysha Khoury
Our congregation is blessed to know Dr. Aysha Khoury. Dr. Khoury is a brilliant doctor and professor. She was suspended unjustly for speaking honestly about racial bias in medicine during a lecture she was asked to prepare on that very topic. (See thread here).
This petition, to be submitted to the Board of Directors at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. The petition calls for:
1) Immediate Full Reinstatement
2) Public Apology
3) Actionable Commitment to Antiracism
We invite you to consider signing, as a show of support to our own Dr. Khoury.

CALL TO PRAYER:
Advent Wreath Lighting: O Come, O Come Emmanuel - Sienna Shepherd & Lauren Korczakowski

2 Samuel 7:1-16
Reader One: We live on the brink every day. We stand on the threshold between this world

and the next one. We live and move between the ordinary and divine, between the mundane and the mystery. Too often, we forget to look up and see the angels in our living room. We forget that the love we give and live is a sign of eternity, God with us, right now. We forget that company is coming.

Reader Two: Luke tells us that God’s favor came to a girl, an ordinary girl. It might have been you or your daughter; it might have been the girl down the street or your grandchild. But the messenger of God came and greeted her and said, “The Lord is with you.” What a gift and a promise: Emmanuel, God is with us.

Reader One: We light these candles with peace in our hearts for the promise of proximity, the nearness of God. Even when we forget to listen, to lean into that presence, God is as close as our own breath. This, in a confused and confusing world, is a peace that passes all understanding. It is the peace that knows that company is coming.

Reader Two: O Come, O Come Emmanuel.

“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, v. 5

Joys and Concerns: We believe that the best way to bear our burdens is to share them with one another. You are invited to share your joys and concerns so that our community can hold these things in our hearts as we lift them to God together.

You are invited to share your prayers in the Facebook Live Chat, or on the YouTube Live chat.

Scripture: Luke 1:26-38, 46-55 NRSV: The Annunciation & Mary’s Magnificat

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”
But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”
The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

One: This is the Word of God for us, the people of God.
All: Thanks be to God!

Sermon: ADVENT IV: SOON AND VERY SOON: Cast Down the Mighty! - Rev. Mandy McDow

HOLY COMMUNION

Invitation to the Table: As we understand the Body of Christ to be inclusive, we understand God’s table of grace and fellowship can extend into our homes. As you’re able, bring your own elements to this time. Bread, Juice, Coffee, Muffins… the Body of Christ is comprised of wonder and mystery. Today, we celebrate that God can reach us where we are, even if we are not together.

The Great Mystery of our Faith
All
: Christ has died
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

The Lord’s PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

MUSIC DURING COMMUNION: It Came Upon A Midnight Clear - El Dorado

Benediction Remember:
God is with you,
God is for you,
God refuses to be God without you.
